The Espírito Santo church, a religious monument, is located in Largo dos Colegiais. It is a magnificent church, like so many others in Évora, being linked to the foundation of the Colégio do Espírito Santo, of the Company of Jesus.
It is close to the main building of the University of Évora. It is in this church that one of the most important artistic landmarks of that company's presence in Portugal is found. The work, marked by the style used in several campaigns of the Society of Jesus, would be completed in 1572 but the solemn consecration would only take place on Easter Sunday in the year 1574. The Espírito Santo church is the first example of the so-called “ground style” and it would serve as a model for many other Jesuit college churches spread across Portugal, the Islands and Brazil.
